The Juvenile Mediation Services Program serves the residents of Wilson, Nash, and Edgecombe counties (District 7). The goal of this program is to provide restorative justice interventions for youth ages 9 and up, in hopes of helping them develop positive decision-making skills. Youth may be referred to the program by School Resource Officers, law enforcement, juvenile court counselors, school faculty, and/or or other appropriate agencies.
Once referred and admitted into the program MCEC staff, the guardian, and the referring agent (if necessary) will meet with the youth offender and family to develop an Individual Service Plan for the youth.
During the mediation session, with the assistance of a mediator, the youth offender and victim will discuss the harm done in hopes of reaching a resolution. If the victim is not willing to participate in a mediation session, the coordinator/mediator will work with the youth to create a Statement of Responsibility, Apology Letter, and/or Action Plan in hopes of helping all parties be able to move forward. After completion of the mediation session(s), if deemed appropriate, the youth will also participate in Conflict Resolution lessons.
